Interested in an awesome summer cultural exchange experience? We have
set up two summer programs in Mexico. The Maestros program is for teachers working in the public school system in Mexico
(elementary, middle, high, university). A Sueños Compartidos volunteer will lead a four-week intensive English
workshop (20-25 hours/week) primarily focusing on conversation/listening/pronunciation. Class size will be up to twenty
students. Our volunteer teacher will receive meals and housing from the teacher group in Mexico.
The Niños program is a summer camp program similar to our Christmas
camp. A group of Sueños Compartidos volunteers will provide a four-week summer camp experience to a group of
elementary school students. The camp activities will include art, dance, drama, science, sports, games... and, of course,
English! The volunteers will receive homestay and meal arrangements with local families.
For both programs, classes are Monday-Friday, and weekends are free to relax, travel,
and practice your Spanish! Mexico is a beautiful country, and it is very easy and affordable to travel within the country.
Additionally, our programs are concentrated in the central highlands of Mexico, so you will have the opportunity to meet up
with other Sueños Compartidos volunteers for the weekend... or you can travel with friends from your teaching community,
or just get on a bus and go! If you want to get an idea of what it is like to travel in Mexico, pick up a Lonely Planet
Mexico at the bookstore and browse through!
We are particularly interested in volunteers who are public school teachers
in high Latino-population schools the United States. As the Latino student population continues to expand in the US,
developing a knowledge of the culture of the Latino community is a critical component of teacher training, and there is simply
no better way to gain this knowledge than by spending a month in Mexico with Sueños Compartidos! As a volunteer,
you will experience Mexico - the food, the music, the geography, and the people!
The dates of both programs are July 8-August 7, 2010. The program
will begin with public school visits during the last week of the school year. The Niños program begins with a week of training; the Maestros program is exclusively for teachers with ESL experience
and does not include a training component. The locations are various towns in the states of Guanajuato, Michoacán,
San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, Guerrero, and Oaxaca. We will begin the application process on March 15, 2010.
In the meantime, feel free to email us if you would like to introduce yourself and begin a conversation about the summer programs!
